RANKING
OF THE WORLD UNIVERSITIES: LESSONS
FOR THE BULGARIAN HIGHER EDUCATION Borislav
V. Toshev (Abstract) Recently
a list of the world’s top 500 universities has been published. This research
has been carried out by the Institute for Higher Education of the Shanghai Jiao
Tong University. The two-year study took account of each university’s Nobel
laureates, highly cited researches, articles published in Nature and Science,
articles in the Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Science
Citation Index, and the academic performance of each faculty. They are
disappointing results for Europe. Bulgaria and its neighbours, except Greece and
Turkey, are not presented within that list. Possible reasons for that bad
situation are commented. The need for the full correspondence between teaching
and research (the sentence‘education and research belong together’ expresses
the very university idea) is emphasized. |
