The
Generations in the conditions of social disintegration Antoniy
Galabov (Abstract)
Bulgaria
finds itself undergoing a process of profound social transformation. The lack of
agreement in the assessment of the totalitarian past is a problem that is
equally serious in every post-totalitarian country of Central and Eastern
Europe, as well as in the countries from the former Soviet Union. Without the
elder generation changing their attitudes to their own life experienced the
effective integration of young generations will continue to map out new arenas
of intergenerational conflict and new levels of social disintegration. The
capacity for civic activity directed towards the guaranteeing of human rights
and free initiative is dependent on a preparedness for reaching consensus in
relation to the values of different generations. The acceptance of the different
other, the tolerance in relations between generations and differing ethno-religious
communities as well as the value-driven consensus on free initiative are at the
heart of the will for democracy in the countries of South-Eastern Europe. By
examining the transfer of experience and values between the generations in
Bulgaria, one is able to delineate and interpret the main problems facing the
adoption of the open society values. It is necessary to construct a research
perspective in which issues of post-totalitarian societies can structure their
public debate on memory and life experiences in conditions of social
transformation. One such theoretical model might stimulate comparative research
in post-totalitarian societies and in this way achieve a new degree of awareness
of their problems. |
