The Global Problem for the Depletion of the Stratospheric Ozone

Vassil Andreev

(Abstact)

The article starts with general information on the composition and vertical structure of the Earth’s atmosphere. The attention is turned on the ozone – one of the main atmospheric trace gases. About 90% of the atmospheric ozone is located in the stratosphere with the highest concentration between 19 and 23 km. The importance of the stratospheric ozone for the atmospheric radiative and heat balances as well as for the human health is pointed out. The ozone production processes, the ozone measurements methods and the history of these measurements in Bulgaria are briefly presented. The ozone destructive processes and their cyclic nature are explained in principle. From the total ozone distribution on the Earth’s surface pictured on Fig. 2 can be seen that at any particular place it is variable and is mainly determined by large-scale atmospheric conditions. The specific winter meteorological conditions – very low temperatures, circumpolar stratospheric vortex and polar stratospheric clouds - are very favourable conditions for the especially strong ozone loss over the Antarctica in human-made compounds presence. The mean “ozone hole” parameters and their values according to measurements during 2002 and 2003 are also given.
