Digital technologies in diagnostic medical imaging Jenia Vassileva Abstract Medical imaging covers five methods for visualization of the human body – X-ray diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine imaging, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and thermography. Two groups of digital methods are introduced in medical imaging. The first group includes intrinsic digital modalities – X-ray computed tomography, MRI, single photon emission tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET). Other group covers imaging modalities, in which only conventional image receptor is replaced by digital detector without changing other elements of the imaging chain – photostimulable (storage) phosphor detectors, charge coupled devices, flat panel detectors with direct and indirect conversion, etc. Advantages of digital imaging are post processing to improve image quality, easy archiving, networking and communication.
