The University – What is this?

Abstract 

            At the present paper some information about the history of the universities is given as well as few of the oldest universities in the world are listed. At the same time definitions of the term “university” is discussed and some information about Bulgarian law for high education is presented. On this base the question about the financial support by the state to the universities in Bulgaria are posed. The world ranking of some European and Bulgarian universities is presented and the list of criterions for preparation of the objective ranking of the Bulgarian universities is proposed, which may be the base of financial support by the state to the universities by the state.
